New SpotRank map will display social activity and real-time population density along the course

BOSTON, MA - July 22, 2010 - Skyhook Wireless®, the worldwide leader in location positioning, context and intelligence, and The San Francisco Marathon™ today announced a collaboration to deploy a real-time map of geotagged mobile activity around the Marathon on Sunday, July 25. The map is live today at: http://www.skyhookwireless.com/spotrank/thesfmarathon/

Skyhook's system is used to determine location on tens of millions of mobile devices and process millions of location requests on its network every day. The San Francisco Marathon™ map uses Skyhook's data intelligence service SpotRank, a measure of real-time population density based on location requests on Skyhook's network. While SpotRank lets spectators view hotspots of activity along the Marathon route, the map also displays what people are saying on Twitter, look at pictures through Flickr, and view Foursquare check-ins all in a custom interface.

“Skyhook's SpotRank map for The San Francisco Marathon allows us to provide a unique view into how the city of San Francisco adapts to the race,” said Lyz Luke, media coordinator for The San Francisco Marathon™. “The map creates a unique online hub for where spectators from all over the world can experience the excitement of the Marathon.”

“We are just beginning to tap into the power of location intelligence,” said Kate Imbach, vice president of marketing for Skyhook. “The Marathon map is just one illustration of how location data, tied to the context of mobile social activity, can give us a new level of insight into the events happening around us.”
