In the past year, we’ve seen mobile apps gain more and more awareness of their users’ needs as they make use of new beacon technology and finally get the hang of location-based targeting. A big part of making sure app users see the full use of the year's greatest advancements is getting them to turn location services on.

So what’s the best way to ask for location permissions? Why do people turn off location services? What role does accuracy play in the mobile experience? We set out to answer those questions, and we went straight to the general public to get answers.

Working in tandem with Research Now, we produced a survey that posed our burning questions to a sample of smartphone users representative of the wider US public. In doing so, we believe we cracked the code on getting location services on.

What should developers and publishers do to encourage people to share their location data?

Apps need to do a better job of proving the value of location services (23% of consumer didn’t see the value).

  • As part of their First Time User Experience (FTUX)tell users what kind of data you collect and why you collect that data. Transparency coupled with an insanely awesome experience tells them not only to keep location on, but to let it run in the background.
  • Ask For Location Permission at the Right Moment. After the FTUX, you can train users on why they should keep location on with awesome use cases showing them the value of the data you can provide them - just make sure you ask them at the right time.
